We started Casco Bay Sea Spray on a dock outside Portland — boiling kettles of Atlantic seawater until what was left was the good stuff: minerals, salt, the smell of fog burning off pines.
Every bottle is mixed by hand, in small batches, with the kind of quiet attention a fishing town teaches you. Nothing else in it. No shortcuts. Just the bay, in a bottle.

I've tried every salt spray out there. This is the only one that doesn't leave my hair feeling like straw.

Two pumps and I'm done. Looks like I just walked off the beach in Kennebunkport.

Our story · Portland, Maine
We built this because we were tired of the lies.
Our mission
To prove that a hair product can be genuinely natural — no synthetic fillers, no hidden chemicals, no compromises — and still outperform everything else on the shelf.
How it started
Born out of frustration. Built with salt water.
We started Casco Bay Spray because we couldn't find a single sea salt spray we actually trusted. Every bottle on the market — no matter how "natural" the label claimed — was full of synthetic polymers, petroleum-derived compounds, and chemical preservatives that nobody could pronounce.
We live on the Maine coast. We have the Atlantic Ocean in our backyard. We didn't need a lab to tell us what salt water does to hair — we'd been watching it work our whole lives. Beach hair isn't a marketing concept up here. It's just what happens when you step outside.
So we started from scratch. We boiled down Atlantic seawater. We tested natural binders, plant-based surfactants, and mineral compounds until we had something that actually worked — that gave real texture and hold without leaving hair crunchy, coated, or chemically stressed.
It took a lot of batches. A lot of bad hair days. But what came out the other side was something we were genuinely proud of: a five-ingredient spray that does exactly what it says, made entirely from things that come from the earth.
The industry problem
What's hiding in everyone else's bottle.
PVP / VA Copolymer
Found in most sea salt sprays
A synthetic plastic polymer used to create that "hold" feeling. It coats the hair shaft with a petroleum-derived film that builds up over time, suffocating the follicle and causing long-term brittleness.
Dimethicone
Silicone derivative — very common
A silicone that creates the illusion of smooth, healthy hair while actually sealing out moisture. Over time it causes buildup, dryness, and scalp irritation — and it doesn't biodegrade.
Phenoxyethanol
Synthetic preservative
A petroleum-derived preservative linked to skin and eye irritation. Widely used because it's cheap — not because it's safe. Banned or restricted in cosmetics in several countries.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Foaming agent — stripping
An aggressive synthetic surfactant that strips natural oils from both hair and scalp. Causes dryness, irritation, and disrupts the scalp's natural microbiome with repeated use.
Artificial Fragrance
Listed simply as "fragrance"
A single word that can legally hide hundreds of undisclosed synthetic chemicals. Many are known allergens and endocrine disruptors. The industry isn't required to tell you what's in it.
Parabens
Preservative class — widespread
Synthetic preservatives that mimic estrogen in the body. Linked to hormonal disruption and detected in human tissue samples. Still legal and still widely used despite the evidence.
The hair care industry is largely unregulated. Companies aren't required to prove their ingredients are safe before putting them in a bottle and selling them to you. We think that's wrong — and we built Casco Bay Spray to be the alternative.
Six ingredients. That's it.
Our answer
Nothing synthetic. Nothing hidden. Nothing to hide.
🌊
Six ingredients, fully disclosed
Every ingredient in Casco Bay Spray is listed on the label — no "fragrance" catch-alls, no hidden fillers. You know exactly what you're putting in your hair.
🌿
Plant-based and mineral only
Everything in our formula comes from the earth — Filtered Maine sea water, natural spring water, rosemary, peppermint and lavender essential oils, biotin, and locally sourced ingredients. No petroleum. No plastics. No synthetics.

Small batch, hand-mixed
We don't mass-produce. Every batch is mixed by hand in Portland, Maine. Smaller batches mean fresher product, tighter quality control, and no cutting corners.
⚓
Made in Maine, for real
This isn't a marketing angle. We live here. We make it here. The salt in your bottle came from these waters. That connection to place is something no factory-line product can replicate.
Rooted in Maine
The coast doesn't cut corners. Neither do we.
Maine has a way of keeping things honest. The ocean doesn't care about marketing. The tide doesn't negotiate. When you grow up on this coast, you learn to respect what's real and ignore everything else. That's the standard we hold ourselves to — every single batch.

Our promise
A word from us.
Casco Bay Spray Co.
We started this brand because we were tired of reading ingredient labels and not recognizing a single word on them. Tired of brands hiding behind the word "fragrance." Tired of an industry that treats customers like they won't notice — or won't care.
You notice. You care. So do we.
Our promise is simple: we will never put a synthetic ingredient in this bottle. We will never hide behind vague labeling. We will never scale up at the expense of quality. If it can't be made honestly, in small batches, with ingredients you can Google and understand — we won't make it.
The hair care industry has been getting away with this for decades. We think it's time someone stopped playing along. That's why Casco Bay Spray exists — and it's the only reason we'll ever need.
